When Carrah Kalat lost her mother to suicide in the summer of 1992, she had just a few months to grieve before starting college. On campus, Kalat juggled feelings of pain with relief that her volatile childhood and her mom’s struggles were over. And when pressed by friends, she’d say it was cancer that killed her mother at 45 — something more respectable, she thought, than alcoholism and depression.
